Movie Review: Superiorly Bad Ladies Inhabit “Booksmart”

On the eve of their high school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends realize they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night.

So at first glance, this looks like your typical teenage, coming-of-age, one night of chaos cliché trope…and it is, but with a twist. First-time director Olivia Wilde takes you for a night you’ll never forget and quite frankly, will want to relive as many times as possible. Although it technically follows the teenage formula to a T, sharp, raunchy and heartwarming at just the right times as it takes its two brainy protagonists through four years of high school partying in one unforgettable night, makes it as unique experience as it can get. Leading ladies Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and their great chemistry, along with a phenomenal supporting cast that includes insanely standout scenes with Billie Lourd’s Gigi, Lisa Kudrow, Will Forte, Jessica Williams, Wilde’s real-life partner Jason Sudeikis and slew of young up and coming actors Although the scenario seems far fetched, this group of talent through their authenticity and genuineness, makes you feel like this is something you could have actually experienced.

Our two sharp-tongued, nerdy, creatively dressed brainiacs have come to the end of their high school careers and realize that they never truly lived that experience, so what’s the clear answer to correct this? Why attend the end of the year blowout of course. On their way there, they are derailed by boat parties, karaoke madness, and pizza delivery guy greatness. Through these trials and tribulations, they naturally endure a journey of self-discovery not only within themselves but the very nature of their friendship. However, through all the craziness and brief moments of doubt, the end result is just what you expect and their bond is just further reinforced.

Olivia Wilde has put together a great piece of work that will surely hold over time. Her casting choices couldn’t have been more perfect, the story carries on without skipping a beat and is visually compelling and aesthetic as well. The girls experience a drug out trip like you’ve never seen before and I commend Wilde on pushing those creative limits. If you’re looking for a bust-out laughing, heartwarming and generational revolutionary movie, then “Booksmart” is not a movie you will want to miss, fair warning, however, once you watch it, you will want to watch again…and again…and again!
