A young woman disenchanted with love mysteriously finds herself trapped inside a romantic comedy.
Every year, Hollywood has to pump out the romantic movies for Valentine’s Day. Rebel Wilson has seen success in films for the better part of this decade and it was only right that she finally starred in her own movie. Going into “Isn’t It Romantic,” I had little to no expectations because it just looked like another throwaway rom-com and I think it just barely surpasses that.
Rebel Wilson plays Natalie, a pessimistic architect who after strange circumstances finds herself in a typical perfect romance film. Rebel Wilson is fine in this movie. She plays the same character we’ve seen her play since “Pitch Perfect” and doesn’t add anything new in this movie. A supporting cast with Liam Hemsworth and Adam Devine do their jobs as the same tropey characters you would expect in these flicks. One thing I will give “Isn’t It Romantic” is the attempt at making a satire of romantic comedies. The film addresses and plays on the regular tropes seen in the genre and for the most part does a great job. While it wasn’t a carbon copy of the movies before it, I still saw the story as nothing that will have audiences raving about it. Overall, the film has a few chuckles but nothing that really blew me away and I think that summarizes the whole movie for me.
One thing that did surprise me was the great cinematography. There were many moments I found myself having a double take on some of the shots this movie brings out. It’s not Oscar worthy but it definitely threw me for a loop. One problem I did had with this film was the attempts of CGI thrown in. There are a few moments that are obviously shot on a green screen that the movie did not even try to hide. Moments like this sprinkled throughout the runtime took me out of the film.
All in all, I thought “Isn’t It Romantic” was a fine film for this time of year. It does all the necessities fans of the genre need but doesn’t bring anything different to lure in those who aren’t fond of the genre. I think if you were looking forward to this you will not be disappointed.
