Movie Soundtrack Review: “The Roads Not Taken” Is A Soundtrack Of Upbeat And Defiant Melodies That Forge A Reckoning Of Personalities

Sally Potter’s film follows a day in the life of Leo (Javier Bardem) and his daughter, Molly (Elle Fanning), as he floats through alternate lives he could have lived, leading Molly to wrestle with her own path as she considers her future.

Sally Potter is an English composer as well as a director and screenwriter for the film and soundtrack “The Roads Not Taken.” Charlotte Sally Potter was born in London to an artistic family and is also well known for award-winning film and album, “Orlando.” The music she has produced for this soundtrack has a range of titles that encompass the film’s portrayal of twenty-four hours in the life of an anguished father and daughter. A few of the uplifting tracks include “The Call,” “On This Day,” “Walking,” and “Tomorrow.” Other tracks such as “A Slower Waltz,” “Another Road,” “Notebook,” and “Slow Gone” are slow-moving and fraught with trepidation. Overall, the entire soundtrack is full of classically-themed melodies with twelve titles that well-support the film’s mood from beginning to end.

Milan Records announces the release of “The Roads Not Taken (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with music by the film’s critically-acclaimed, award-winning director Sally Potter. The album includes music written by Potter for her new film and features long-term collaborator and guitarist Fred Frith, violinist Viktoria Mullova, cellist Matthew Barley, percussionist Paul Clarvis and bassist Misha Mullov-Abado.

Of the soundtrack, the film’s director and composer Sally Potter says, “The music for ‘The Roads Not Taken’ emerged as an extension of the scriptwriting process. Sitting in the editing room, watching the images shape and re-shape as the story found its final form, I could hear, in my inner ear, the unique sounds of some of my favorite musicians, including my long-term collaborator Fred Frith, whose electric guitars have graced many of my films. I wanted to bring his sound together with the extraordinary acoustic world of Viktoria Mullova’s violin, Matthew Barley’s cello, Paul Clarvis’ percussion, and Misha Mullov-Abado’s double bass.”
