Movie Review: “Deadliest Disease In America” Uncovers The Ugly Reality About Racism In America’s Healthcare System

Filmmaker Crystal Emery highlights the unequal treatment that individuals often receive based on the color of their skin.

If you google the phrase “Deadliest disease in America,” you’ll come up with a list of chronic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes. However, this documentary exposes the real disease called racism that has been plaguing this country since the beginning of time. Many black and brown people are constantly fighting for acceptable health care and/or treatment that is not available in their communities. Many are turned away from emergency rooms, not thoroughly diagnosed, treated poorly, and denied pertinent information regarding access to helpful resources for no reason other than their race.

The conversation around racism within the healthcare system is clearly one that is long overdue and filmmaker Crystal R. Emery does an amazing job breaking down systemic racism and how it affects the lack of quality healthcare in black and brown communities. This documentary is an eye-opener and uncovers the ugly reality about America’s healthcare system. This is definitely a film I recommend and a conversation I’ll be having for a very long time.

“Deadliest Disease in America” will have its red carpet premiere at
Cinema Village in Manhattan Friday, September 10th
