Tribeca Film Festival Review: “Westfalia” Is A Hilarious Look At How Social Media Literally Takes Over Our Lives And Keeps Us Constantly Seeking Validation

A couple embarks on an epic road trip in an attempt to gain more followers after their Instagram rival’s fame doubles overnight.

A couple, Brody (Brian Flynn) and Emilia (Haley Finnegan), plan a road trip in hopes to get the best moments on camera that will attract more Instagram followers. Every life decision seems to revolve around what they should post. They spend all day on their phones checking out other influencer’s pages, desperate to figure out how to gain a bigger following. They head out camping and neither one of them wants to be there, but the scenery is so majestic and beautiful, perfect for pretending they are on an amazing adventure having the time of their lives. They take fake photos in a cave, on a boat, even out on a random rock located in the middle of the river that they have to figure out how to get off of.

They notice a famous Instagram couple just posted some epic photos traveling and living their best life. Brody and Haley are shocked by all of the likes on their new pictures, so they decide to drive all the way to their location hoping to get footage together that will raise their social media status and attract more people to their page. They show up pretending to be surprised they ran into them and invite them out for wine with the intent to gain the secrets to their success. Disappointed that the couple won’t reveal anything, Brody gets desperate and pulls a stunt to propose to Emilia and it works! The couple catches it on camera and posts to Instagram.

This is such a cool, hilarious jab at the way society is right now. This film is funny and smart but makes you think how so many people base their self-worth around being accepted on social media, wanting to be noticed, liked, and have fans. Even going as far as creating false relationships, moments and situations to present a facade of having more and being more than they actually are. They constantly try to one-up the next person, missing all of the real moments in life just to get attention from people they don’t know. I also think about every time I post a picture, why do I check to see if anyone liked it. Movie, well done!

“Westfalia” recently premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival
