The Dallas Film Society Announces 2015 Summer Film Camp Workshops

This summer, the Dallas Film Society will offer two three-day workshops for students ages 14-18. Professors from the SMU Meadows School of the Arts – Division of Film and Media Arts will present highly focused information on film topics and tricks of the trade during Production Boot Camp and What Makes a Good Documentary. Students will be submerged into the world of filmmaking in a fun, unique, and hands-on setting that far exceeds standard classroom work. All workshops will be held at SMU in the Umphrey Lee Center located at 3300 Dyer St. Dallas, TX 75205.

Production Boot Camp will provide an introductory to the techniques, language, and process of filmmaking. Students will dive into basics of filmmaking techniques, including camera angles and shot, lighting, sound recording, acting style, screenwriting, storyboarding, and directing. They will also learn the foundation in film vocabulary and criticism as well as ideas about how to get your film in front of an audience. Students will be given the opportunity for hands on experience with storyboarding, screenwriting, acting, writing reviews, and making a movie. Production Boot Camp will take place from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM on Wednesday, July 8th through Friday, July 10th.

The second Summer Workshop, What Makes a Good Documentary, will take place Monday, July 13th through Wednesday, July 15th from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM. During this workshop, students will learn the ins and outs of “real world” documentary storytelling. Camera aesthetics, basic sound recording, editing, interviewing, social interaction, and team building will be taught throughout the class.

“We are thrilled to introduce another group of students to the world of filmmaking and allow them to expand their imaginations and become truly inspired by film,” said Renée Contreras, Director of Membership, Education, and Outreach for the Dallas Film Society. “We are grateful to the professors at the SMU Meadows School of the Arts – Division of Film and Media Arts for believing in film education for high school students and providing them with an opportunity to find a passion in the arts.”

A single three-day workshop costs $245.00 for Dallas Film Society Members and $275.00 for non-members. Registration for both workshops is available at a discounted rate of $415.00 for Dallas Film Society Members and $475.00 for non-members. Each student will receive a Dallas Film Society Summer Camp t-shirt. Students are encouraged to bring their own lunch to the workshops.

Each workshop has a capacity of 35 students. Registration will close when each workshop has reached capacity. For additional information, visit http://www.dallasfilm.org/2015/04/2015-dfs-summer-film-camp/
