Movie Review: “Troop Zero” Is Beautiful, Funny And Inspiring

In rural 1977 Georgia, a misfit girl dreams of life in outer space. When a competition offers her a chance to be recorded on NASA’s Golden Record, she recruits a makeshift troop of Birdie Scouts, forging friendships that last a lifetime.

Christmas Flint (Mckenna Grace), an eccentric outsider in her small town in Georgia, has always dreamed of communicating with extraterrestrials. When she finds out about a Birdie Jamboree contest where the winning team will be recorded on NASA’s golden record and sent into outer space, she becomes determined to win. After being denied by troop organizer Miss Massey (Allison Janney), who doesn’t believe she is cut out to be a Birdie, Christmas and her best friend Joseph (Charlie Shotwell) set out to form their own troop. As they recruit other kids who are also considered misfits, they ultimately form a rare friendship that would otherwise be unlikely.

As the troop finally comes together, Miss Massey informs them they must have a group leader and earn the remaining of the badges in order to compete at the jamboree. Christmas begs her father’s work assistant Miss Rayleen (Viola Davis) to be their leader and help them win the contest. With constant bullying from other troops, a series of difficult challenges lie ahead of them which include baking, selling cookies, and surviving in the woods, and then they make it to the jamboree just to lose but with a stroke of luck, Christmas and her troop end up on that record anyway.

This is such a lovely film with a beautiful story and cast. You are really going to enjoy it.
