Movie Review: “The Golem” Is Dull & Predictable

During an outbreak of a deadly plague, a mystical woman must save her tight-knit Jewish community from foreign invaders, but the entity she conjures to protect them is a far greater evil.

“The Golem” is set within a Jewish community, after a group of outsiders attack and invade their community during a deadly plague. Specifically, we follow a woman who chooses to conjure an entity to protect their village from these invaders. This entity ends up being a greater threat than she imagined it would be. We end up getting insight about this woman and her home life as well as a loss she suffered many years ago. Outside of the main plot, I did not retain much about this film.

I truly do not have a lot to say about this other than it was just boring and once the movie finished, I had already forgotten a lot of what I had seen. I hate that I feel this way, I wish I could have liked it or had found something redeeming to cling onto, I just couldn’t though. I personally do not know if this is supposed to be a horror film or not, the tone is not all that clear to me, it is a shame because there is a lot of stuff from Dread Central Presents and Epic Pictures that I truly enjoy. I thought that “Terrifier” was one of the best horror films that came out last year. What this film didn’t have that “Terrifier” did, was an edge. “The Golem” feels pretty safe and by the book for me. I have come to start hating this more and more in cinema as of late.

As I said, I really do not like writing bad reviews because there is always something good to say about a film. I will just say this one was not for me and that is okay. I hope that if you choose to watch this, you find more enjoyment out of it than I did. I want to be clear in saying that I don’t think you should skip this just because of my review. Give it a shot if it intrigues you.
