Movie Review: “Olympia” Is A Very Honest Look An An Extraordinary Woman’s Journey To Success With No Regrets

An uncompromising truth-seeking rebel, Olympia Dukakis refuses to yield to social norms while pushing forward her own subversive narrative.

An Academy Award-winner with a long list of timeless movies under her belt, Olympia Dukakis didn’t rise to fame easily. This funny and honest documentary tells the life of a rebellious woman who lived on her own terms finding happiness, success, and true love, unapologetically. Many documentaries about famous actors tend to glamorize their personas, leaving out anything that could be deemed as damaging to their image but what I love about “Olympia” is it shows the raw and real. Not always the perfect, poised woman who follows the rules, Olympia smokes, curses, and is not shy about telling details of her past promiscuity, drugs use, and intimate details of her marriage.

Her contribution and dedication to her craft have been praised by many of her famous peers such as Whoopi Goldberg, Laura Linney, Ed Asner, and Lynn Cohen, to name just a few, who all appear in the film. I thought this documentary was funny, authentic, and such a pleasure to watch, I would definitely recommend this one.
