Movie Review: “Nationtime” Recounts An Extraordinary Piece Of American History That Should Never Be Forgotten

A report on the National Black Political Convention held in Gary, Indiana, in 1972, a historic event that gathered voices from across the political spectrum.

Producer, Writer, Director, Cinematographer and Editor of over seventy-five films, William Greaves captures this powerful moment in American history like never seen before. Said to be the only filmed record of this event, the negative was discovered in a warehouse in 2018 and carefully restored under the guidance of his widow Louise. Nationtime documents the National Black Political Convention that took place is Gary, Indiana, in 1972.

The convention included some of the most powerful speeches from political leaders including Reverend Jesse Jackson, Amiri Baraka, and Betty Shabazz. Debates included issues surrounding police brutality, voting rights, economics, education and healthcare in the black community; the same issues being fought for today. Narrated by Sidney Poitier, this powerful documentary reminds you of the constant struggle black Americans have always faced but also celebrates unity and hope reminding us we still have a long way to go. One of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen!

Opens in Select Theaters, Virtual Cinemas, and Drive-ins Friday, October 23rd
