Movie Review: “It Watches” Is A Genuinely Creepy Horror Film

Andre, recovering from a recent accident, agrees to help his friend Robert by taking over a house-sitting job at a creepy home nestled in the hills above Los Angeles.

“It Watches” is a interesting story by its writer/director Dave Parker and his co-writer/lead actor Ivan Djurovic. The duo deliver an impressive thriller, full of twists and turns and confusion. Even when you think you know what is going on, you don’t.

“It Watches” captures a number of common horror movie tropes, but shows them to the viewer in new ways. Andre is a kind, injured, likeable guy, trying to figure out who he is, and is suddenly thrust into the middle of another’s problem, due to helping his friend out. He is stuck in the middle of a haunted house of horror. The house is filled with strange dolls, and a large number of BDSM-like objects. Andre was told to document his life in order to help jog his memory. As he walks around, camera in hand, Andre begins to discover more about the owner of the house. The film uses this an interesting narrative to explore Andre’s missing memories, as well as the house. The more time he spends in the house, the more terrors fall on him. He wakes up from terrible nightmares. Random noises can constantly be heard coming from different parts of the house and Andre starts to slowly lose his mind, as things that can’t be explained continuously happen.

This movie definitely has moments that break the cinematic experience. Some of the transitions feel rough. The scenes at times jump around, showing alternative perspectives, outside of the footage being recorded from the camera Andre carries throughout the film. There are cameras in the house that the movie constantly shows footage from but their placement is never explained. There are more things like this that are just never explained. “It Watches” is definitely worth a watch but it might not be worth a second, depending on what you are in to. I watched it a few times just to make sure I didn’t miss anything.
