The fourth installment in Tom Holland’s tenure as Marvel’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man isn’t just another great sequel; it’s the Best. Spider-Man. Ever. Packed with impeccably choreographed action sequences, standout performances from its ensemble cast, and franchise-redefining twists, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is everything fans could hope for. This is Spider-Man at his most amazing.
Picking up after the heartbreaking events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Peter Parker continues his lonely existence in a world where no one remembers who he is behind the mask. Tom Holland delivers his strongest performance yet in the role, perfectly capturing Peter’s isolation and frustration while reminding us why he has what it takes to protect New York.
Continuing the trend of hand-picking other MCU regulars to star alongside Spidey, “Brand New Day” pairs him with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher. Their chemistry is electric. Bernthal’s hardened, foul-mouthed vigilante is the perfect foil for Holland’s family-friendly hero, creating a dynamic that’s equal parts hilarious, tense, and surprisingly heartfelt. While comics-savvy fans may spend the entire film hoping another famous NYC hero swings into frame, “Brand New Day” proves these two are more than enough to carry the film. Mark Ruffalo also returns as the Hulk, with Sadie Sink playing the film’s central villain. Without spoiling too much, I will say the execution of her character’s capabilities and motivation is exceptional.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton builds on the kinetic style he showcased in his previous Marvel project, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” delivering slick camerawork that never loses sight of Spider-Man’s acrobatic energy. The web-swinging has never looked this fresh, the action has never felt this inventive, and several sequences genuinely feel like comic book panels brought to life. There’s a vitality to the action that makes the entire franchise feel reborn.
What elevates “Brand New Day” above many recent Marvel films is its level of synergy. Rather than relying on cameos as a crutch, the film naturally brings both new and familiar MCU faces into Peter’s journey, expanding the world without ever overshadowing its central hero. The story honors the emotional story threads lingering from the previous chapter while confidently weaving Spider-Man into an exciting new era.
The emotional payoffs land, the action scenes are exciting and tasteful, and every character feels like a participant in a living, breathing universe. It reminded me why I fell in love with Marvel movies in the first place.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” succeeds as both a street-level Spidey adventure and a bold leap forward for the MCU. Funny, heartfelt, and visually stunning, it’s not only the best Spider-Man film yet, but it’s also one of Marvel Studios’ finest achievements.
