Movie Review: I Had High Hopes For “Corporate Animals” But It Failed My Expectations

Lucy is the egotistical megalomaniac CEO of Incredible Edibles, America’s premier provider of edible cutlery. In her infinite wisdom, Lucy leads her staff including her long-suffering assistants, Freddie and Jess, on a corporate team-building caving weekend to New Mexico. When disaster strikes, not even their useless guide, Brandon can save them. Trapped underground by a cave-in, this mismatched and disgruntled group must pull together in order to survive.

Lucy (Demi Moore), a mean, dishonest boss who profits from her employees’ ideas, constantly seeks new ways to challenge her staff, but when she organizes a team-building retreat in a cave out in the middle of nowhere, things take a turn for the worst. Along with a guide Brandon (Ed Helms), Lucy leads her staff down into the cave to demonstrate different skills aimed at working together to problem-solve. When the rocks begin to collapse and they realize they are stuck inside, Brandon tries to crawl through a hole and is killed. With limited food and water, the team makes the executive decision to eat Brandon. As each day goes by, not knowing whether or not they will survive, one by one the employees become desperate and delirious.

Lucy keeps herself busy, feeding off of the insecurity of her assistants Jess (Jessica Williams) and Freddie (Karan Soni) as she pins them against each other, promising both a VP title. When they finally realize what she is doing, they come together, supporting each on a mission to crawl their way out. As the team gets hungrier and loses hope of getting rescued, office scandals begin to surface. Apparently, Lucy has been forcing Freddie to sleep with her against his will and one of the other employees has been sleeping with Brandon and her co-worker girlfriend confronts her. A heavy argument stirs up physical conflict and Lucy ends up hitting her head on a rock. Not quite dead, the employees make the executive decision to kill her off, leaving more food for them until they are finally rescued.

I was expecting to see Demi Moore back on the big screen starring in something different and cool but this just wasn’t one of those films. I think this was a great role for her and she plays the rude boss well, but the storyline just didn’t deliver. The topic of sexual harassment was kind of taken as a joke, and the whole cannibalism was just weird.
