Movie Review: “Helmut Newton: The Bad And The Beautiful” Is Fun, Provocative And Sexy, Exactly What We All Need Right Now

Helmut Newton paved the way for fashion photography to become more provocative, and more daring. Incorporating complex themes of sexuality and desire into his work, he showed that fashion photography did not have to be banal and safe, but had the scope to explore the human condition in all its depth.

I’ve always loved everything about fashion and the more eccentric the better. There are many iconic photographers who will be forever loved in the industry like Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Peter Lindbergh, and then there is Helmut Newton! Helmut Newton was known for his shocking and often radical photographs that pushed boundaries and caused controversy. This documentary takes you behind the scenes giving you a closer look into his private life, sharing the most intimate details of how he came to be. As one of the most influential photographers who’ve worked with top fashion magazines like Vogue, Newton was constantly scrutinized regarding his over the top sexual photographs suggesting hatred towards women.

Some of the most memorable supermodels and icons in fashion who’ve had the pleasure of working and being photographed by Newton reveal what it was like being one of his subjects and how they were inspired by his passion, dedication, and authenticity. Interviews include supermodels Grace Jones, Charlotte Rampling, Isabella Rossellini, Marianne Faithfull, Claudia Schiffer, and fashion icon Anna Wintour, to name just a few, who share their wonderful stories of a man they all loved, respected and will never forget.

Premieres exclusively in New York City at the Film Forum’s Virtual Cinema Friday, July 24th
