Movie Review: “Focus” Makes You Pay Attention Without Even Trying

[yasr_overall_rating]

In the midst of veteran con man Nicky’s latest scheme, a woman from his past – now an accomplished femme fatale – shows up and throws his plans for a loop.

Nicky (Will Smith), a veteran Con Artist makes his life’s work very appealing given the basic tricks of the trade. Within the first few scenes of this film, directors John Requa and Glen Ficarra immediately cut to the chase as Nicky makes an honest attempt at testing Jess (Margot Robbie) to see if she can qualify as a recruit. Impressed by his quick moves and irresistible charm, Jess immediately wants in, but Nicky doesn’t make her a part of the team until she proves herself by mastering the art of thievery through the secret of focusing. Jess has her own point of focus as she attempts to steal Nicky’s heart in the process of becoming his partner in crime.

Working in close contact with each other, Nicky lets his guard down and exposes his past and the rocky relationship he has had with his father and grandfather who seemingly taught him everything they knew and then abandoned him. This weakness is an added attraction for Jess as she takes advantage of every available option in order to get closer to Nicky and deeper into the con game. After a major bust, when the entire team’s winnings are at stake, Jess is convinced she has saved the day and her status as a keeper. At the same time that Nicky informs her that she was used as part of a bigger ploy to double their earnings, he also pays her off and tells her that her services are no longer needed.

Three years later when Nicky has his eyes set on hitting pay dirt in a racing scheme in Buenos Aires, he meets up unexpectedly with Jess who has moved her con game to a whole new level. As Nicky’s heart gets in the way of doing business, he loses focus and all he’s ever worked for appears to be at stake until a perplexing turn of events has his father Bucky (Gerald McRaney) bailing both Nicky and Jess out. Will Smith is pretty convincing as a con artist, but a con artist with a weak heart is a bit of a stretch. In spite of this, the film is entertaining and full of laughs. It will cause you to up your game or just totally give it up. When someone tells you to focus, even if it’s just on Will’s amazing body, just do it!

In theaters February 27th
