DOC NYC Movie Review: “Lift Like A Girl” Is The Ultimate Female Empowerment, Proving Young Women Can Do Anything

From a scrappy, vacant-lot training site in Alexandria, Egypt, to the Olympic Games, 14-year-old Zebiba stands at the precipice between childhood and weightlifting champion – guided only by her dedicated yet relentless coach, Captain Ramadan, and her own competitive edge. Can she make the leap?

In 2003, fifteen-year-old Nahla Ramadan became the first Egyptian world weight lifting champion inspiring young girls everywhere to follow in her footsteps. As women are not as encouraged to play sports, let alone one typically dominated by men, in Alexandria, Egypt, a man who goes by the name of Captain Ramadan, dedicates his life to inspiring and coaching young girls to become weight lifting champions.

This film follows fourteen-year-old Zebiba as she trains relentlessly to become the next champion. This is not only a story about dedication, hard work, and female empowerment, it’s about love and true friendship that has the power to overcome all odds. This is so amazing and inspiring, even if you’re not into sports, I guarantee you’re going to love it!
