Movie Review: “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” Is Only A Small Diversion From Its Prequel

Beatrice Prior must confront her inner demons and continue her fight against a powerful alliance which threatens to tear her society apart with the help from others on her side.

Tris (Shailene Woodley) is still drop-dead gorgeous and there just aren’t any words for how well Tobias (Theo James) can work magic for the camera with his good looks. These are basic facts that have little to do with the Factions or Factionless but seem to be one of many things you can predict in the second series of this youth vs. beauty trilogy directed by Robert Schwentke. From the beginning, Tris’ in and out of consciousness state seems to work against her and serves fruitless in logically determining her next real step in seeking vengeance in the death of her mother in the prequel “Divergent.”

Those who are followers of the series have waited 200 years to see more of Chicago’s ruins serve as breeding grounds for the legions of soldiers whose allegiance only seems to be to themselves. The infighting amongst the groups is almost as distracting as Jeanine (Kate Winslet) being a powerbroker with lots of ambition but more ambiguity than clear thought methods of defeat. If you’re really caught up in the futuristic wars that make Amity, Euridite, Candor, Abnegation and Dauntless seem surreal, then this film will be exciting as it feeds off the fearlessness of young minds and the tried and true faces of aged wisdom.

Two hundred and eighty-eight million dollars wasn’t just thrown at this movie but was put to good use in transforming the best and worst of Chicago into testing sites for the purest of the Divergents. Of course, a dramatic ending is expected and powerful enough to lead into the beginning of the final installment in the trilogy. Interestingly enough, the women have their way until it leads to one path that is not big enough for two. “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” is a must for those who are daring enough to follow an almost-predictable plot, and for those who are just hanging on for the ride, it is still entertaining enough to make it worth the trip.

In theaters March 20th
