TV Review: “Dear…” Is A Beautiful Tribute To Icons That Have Changed Lives All Over The World

An inventive approach to biographies of iconic figures in society by using letters written by those whose lives have been changed through their work.

This inspiring series consists of 10 recognized icons whose art, activism, and leadership has and continues to touch lives all over the world. Ordinary people from all walks of life share letters of gratitude expressing how their lives have been forever changed. As these stories are read from some of their biggest fans, they discover how deeply their contribution has impacted others, motivating them to change the world. The series accounts intimate narratives from well-known entertainers including Oprah Winfrey, whose groundbreaking talk show was the first to present topics that were considered controversial at the time like racism, mental illness, and sexual assault. Others include director Spike Lee who created powerful, authentic stories about the black experience at a time when there wasn’t any positive representation on the big screen.

Misty Copeland shares her struggles about becoming the first black principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater, creating opportunities for more black girls to dance in leading roles. Others who have influenced the masses with their work include writer and political activist Gloria Steinem, producer and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda, actress and activist Yara Shahidi, superstar singer Stevie Wonder, Olympian gymnast Aly Raisman and even Big Bird, who captured the hearts of so many children and adults.

I thought this series was beautiful and heartfelt. It shows how each and every one of us can touch so many people through our art, words, activism, and kindness, sparking global change and opening the doors for more to create a better world.

Available to stream on Apple TV+ Friday, June 5th
