NBC5/KXAS won five regional Edward R. Murrow Awards in a variety of categories including investigative reporting, news series, continuing coverage, sports reporting and use of video.

“Injured Heroes, Broken Promises” won in both the Investigative Reporting and News Series categories. A six-month-long joint investigation between NBC 5 and The Dallas Morning News uncovered complaints from hundreds of injured, active-duty soldiers who say they were mistreated, harassed and verbally abused by commanders of the U.S. Army’s Warrior Transition Units. Just nine days after the first NBC 5 report aired and appeared in The Dallas Morning News, the Army issued orders requiring all staff at Warrior Transition Units to undergo new training worldwide. The series was produced by the NBC 5 team of Scott Friedman, Eva Parks and Peter Hull along with Dave Tarrant of The Dallas Morning News.
“Fire In the Attic” won in the Continuing Coverage category. This investigative series revealed serious safety concerns surrounding flexible gas lines known as “CSST” or Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing used in many North Texas homes. The story explained that attic fires caused by gas leaks in the tubing may develop after lightning strikes occur near a home. Scott Friedman, Eva Parks and Peter Hull of NBC 5 produced the reports.
The NBC5 team of David Watkins and Noah Bullard produced “Relentless,” which won in the Sports Reporting category and told how determined U.S. Army veteran Tom Lee has overcome cancer and a leg amputation from combat wounds to train for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil.
NBC5 Investigative Photographer and Editor Peter Hull earned top honors in the Use of Video category for his compilation of compelling video and audio used to tell stories throughout the year.
Edward R. Murrow Awards are presented annually by The Radio Television Digital News Association, the world’s largest professional organization devoted exclusively to electronic journalism. Region six includes the states of Texas and Oklahoma. The NBC5 material will now compete on the national level.
