Harper enters high school and sparks a relationship with her brother’s best friend, Tilly. While Harper deals with social blowback, the older Tilly is congratulated, setting up a very modern love story in the age of #TimesUp and #MeToo.
A relationship between teenagers Harper (Anjini Taneja Azhar) and Tilly (Quinn Liebling) results in a story about societal pressures, double standards, and feminism. When fourteen-year-old Harper begins secretly dating her brother’s best friend Tilly, word spreads at school, causing tension between the siblings, along with rumors of promiscuity. Seems like just another teen movie until it becomes bombarded with constant reminders that women are mistreated, and men need to do more to protect the rights of women.
Harper is depicted as super smart, progressive, and having it all together but I would have preferred to see a more realistic version of a teen as we all remember what it was like to deal with insecurities, boyfriends, and breakups. Seems like this film tried a bit too hard to push the feminist agenda while creating characters that seemed a bit too mature in some ways, missing issues that would have been addressed in real life, like pregnancy scares, body insecurities, and so on. Even in the end, when the two break up, they become fast friends again, forgetting everything that happened. Even her brother goes back to being Tilly’s best friend which made me think to myself, this is cute but in no way would any of this ever happen.
