Movie Review: Tim Heidecker Escapes A Murder Charge And Then Runs For District Attorney In “Mister America”

“Mister America” follows Tim Heidecker’s attempt to enter the world of politics. After beating a murder charge for selling faulty e-cigarettes at an EDM festival, Tim seeks revenge by running a campaign to unseat the San Bernardino District Attorney. Fueled by ego and ignorance, he tries to surmount a lack of experience, funds, and likability by personally connecting with unsuspecting constituents. It does not go well.

After escaping a 2nd-degree felony murder charge for distributing toxic vapors at the Electric Sun Desert Music Festival, resulting in the death of 20 teenagers, Tim Heidecker decides to run for District Attorney of San Bernardino against Vincent Rossetti who was the prosecutor on his case. Arrogant and with no prior experience in law or politics, Tim and his manager, Toni Newman (Terri Parks), and the juror responsible for the mistrial verdict begin their first campaign.

Promising to rid 100% of the crime in San Bernardino, Tim gets in over his head trying to organize a professional campaign and obtain enough signatures to get on the ballot. Trying to convince the public that Vincent Rossetti in incapable of being district attorney due to his failure during the trial, Tim creates attacks against him during his public debates describing him as a rat. When word gets out about this documentary, Gregg Turkington, former co-host of Tim’s web series “On Camera,” which critiqued movies, emerges with information about Tim’s past, which includes alleged arsenic, stealing, and lack of knowledge about film.

With the camera following Tim just weeks up until the election, I was amused at his inability to be unrelatable to anyone in the community at his debates. At one point he denounced rap music in a barbershop where he was trying to get votes, claiming that it would cause the urge to commit a crime. Tim lacks self-control regarding his temper and excessive drinking and it no surprise that he is unable to get the number of signatures to be on the ballot and is ultimately defeated by Rossetti. This is by far one of the funniest films I’ve seen in a long time concerning politics, and not one person in the theater could control their extreme laughter, I questioned whether this whole situation was even real. What a great documentary, you will definitely be thoroughly entertained from beginning to end!
