Movie Review: “The Wind” Could Have Been Better But Lacked Full Story Development

A supernatural thriller set in the Western frontier of the late 1800s, “The Wind” stars Caitlin Gerard as a plains-woman driven mad by the harshness and isolation of the untamed land.

Lizzy (Caitlin Gerard) her husband Isaac (Ashley Zukerman) live alone in a secluded town and welcome new neighbors Gideon and Emma (Dylan McTee and Julia Golden Telles). As Emma and Lizzy spend more time together, Emma reveals that she has been noticing very strange things but Lizzy denies such events and suggests that she keep her stories to herself. As the movie develops we find out this evil spirit can move through animals as well as people. It is a dark shadow essence that gets into your body and forces you to do vicious acts like kill. It can appear at any time of day or night but we never know its origin or what it wants, when exactly it appeared in this town and why.

By the time Emma finds out she is pregnant, she has completely inhabited this demon. It is revealed through flashbacks that Lizzy too has seen it and has been affected by it but came back unscathed. The story could have been stronger but it takes too many turns and has underdeveloped parts that do not answer all of the questions that are relevant. For instance, the biggest issue is not knowing what exactly this demon is and why it came to them. Who is its main target and why? Evil entities always have a purpose and specific people they hunt in movies. Wenever find this out, it is just out there somewhere and appears out of nowhere with no back story which we always need. Also, there are mini stories that don’t seem to serve any purpose, like flashbacks of Lizzy losing a child or all of a sudden the reveal that Emma’s baby is actually by Lizzy’s husband Isaac. This story never develops and we never understand why that affair would happen to begin with. And most of all, what does this have to do with the evil spirit that is haunting everyone?

While the entity gets stronger and shows itself more, Lizzy seems to escape while the others fall prey to it. I feel like this film has a lot of explaining to do. It has a great pace, amazing chemistry of the characters and a super strong cast but it should have stuck to one strong storyline. Just give me some crazy spirit that gets loose by accident and targets certain people. Create something that can kill it and that’s would have been good enough for me. I would definitely go see this movie because the cast is really amazing but don’t be in a hurry.

Opens in theaters April 5th
