Movie Review: “Scavenger” Is An Attempt At A Love Letter To Older Cinema But Gets Lost In The Overtly Grotesque And Needlessly Violent Plot

In a post-apocalyptic world with its own rules, Tisha, an assassin and organ dealer with a dark past, seeks revenge for a crime that marked her life.

“Scavenger” takes us on a journey with Tisha, an assassin and organ dealer living in a post-apocalyptic world. She learns that her latest target is more than just another kidney for her to take. This mission is an opportunity for Tisha to get revenge on a ghost from her past.

“Scavenger” is an Argentinian film from co-directors Eric Fleitas and Luciana Garraza. The film’s focus is Tisha, an assassin and organ dealer working in a bleak dystopian world. The film mimics a “Mad Max”-style of production design in their post-apocalyptic world. Along with other similarities to genre-type movies, the film begins with a quick introduction to Tisha’s world. During this portion of the movie, we can appreciate the production design and dedication to practical effects but to that end, that’s all there is to praise.

The film delves into a pervy and hyper-violent rabbit hole after the main plot comes to fruition. An unnerving sexual assault that goes on far too long is the worst part of the shocking depictions in this film. The runtime is about 73 mins and still, it’s too long for the story being told. Despite the lack of originality or even a cohesive storyline, the potential in the directing talent is clear from these two. They have no caution when it comes to trying to push the boundaries within their stories and hopefully, with a more developed script, they can continue to find their voice. My recommendation would be to avoid this movie if you’re one that’s easily disturbed but also, keep a look out for this duo as they are in the development of a new horror anthology project that is sure to bring their grim palate back to the screen.
