Movie Review: Sadly, “The Lodge” Couldn’t Scare A Two-Year-Old

A soon-to-be stepmom is snowed in with her fiancé’s two children at a remote holiday village. Just as relations begin to thaw between the trio, some strange and frightening events take place.

I remember a point in time where horror movies had really strong storylines with interesting characters and scary scenes. You never knew who the killer was because the writing was so clever, but throughout the whole film, every time the dramatic music came you automatically grabbed your neighbor’s arm because you were definitely going to scream for your life! Sadly, I didn’t scream one time watching this film.

The story takes off when Richard (Richard Armitage) invites his new fiancé Grace (Riley Keough) to their cabin to spend the Christmas holiday with his children Mia (Lia McHugh) and Aiden (Jaeden Martell) after the suicide of his ex-wife Laura (Alicia Silverstone). The children do not like Grace and make sure to keep their distance. After they arrive at the cabin, Richard leaves Grace to watch after the children while he is away for work. Strange things start to happen after Mia and Aiden begin digging up information about Grace’s sinister past.

As the film progresses, Grace begins to hear voices and starts to hallucinate of having near-death experiences and constantly being told to repent for her sins. Nearly an hour into the film, with both people to my left and right now asleep, it is revealed that the children set up the whole scenario to make Grace believe she was going crazy; how they pulled this off we never find out. Too bad she actually does end up going crazy and the movie ends with more religious songs and repenting. Sorry guys but don’t rush to see this one. The story just didn’t develop into anything solid or interesting. The movie is just confusing and besides a bit of blood and a ton of Bible verses, not one thing is scary about this film.
