Movie Review: “Rise Again: Tulsa And The Red Summer” Shows A Race Riot That Led To The Massacre Of Hundreds Of Blacks Where Justice Was Never Served

One hundred years after the two-day Tulsa Massacre, one of America’s most violent racial conflicts, this documentary explores the role of media during these early 20th century events and today’s revived call for justice and anti-racism.

One of the most horrific massacres in US history was dismissed and even denied by many including the media, but survivors and descendants of the victims continue to assure this tragedy will never be forgotten. In 1921, gangs of white locals went on a two-day killing spree in Greenwood, one of the most prominent African American neighborhoods of Tulsa, Oklahoma, killing hundreds, destroying their homes and businesses, leaving thousands displaced.

This amazing documentary accounts the events leading up to what was called the Red Summer, due to the amount of bloodshed left, the effects it had on the community, and how it was downplayed to nearly unreported in the media. With consistent research and determination, journalists along with historians, remain persistent in uncovering more victims of this crime and resurrecting their stories in hopes of justice and reparations. This is such a strong documentary that shines a spotlight on one of the most gruesome crimes that was purposely kept quiet but still burn bright in the hearts of those like you and me who will never forget.

Premieres on National Geographic Friday, June 18th
and on Hulu the next day, Juneteenth, Saturday, June 19th
