It was supposed to be an adventure of a lifetime as three young girls spend the summer in Thailand. But their adventure quickly becomes a nightmare when the trio unleashes the spirit of a murdered child with only one thing on her mind – revenge.
If you enjoy slasher movies with loads of blood and hotties running around in skimpy attire, then you’ll appreciate “Pernicious.” When Alex (Ciara Hanna), Julia (Emily O’Brien) and Rachel (Jackie Moore) arrive in Thailand with fashionable cargo and scanty outfits, we know we’re in for a cheeseball full-of-fun horror movie. The girls are in Thailand for charity work and upon arriving at a creepy old house, find a disturbing gold statue of a young girl. This doesn’t hold their interest long and they find themselves out partying with three men. Never a good idea to bring home strangers, the girls do just that and wake the next morning to discover the men and the statue missing.
They each recall vivid, horrific dreams from the night before and set out to find the statue. This entails a series of bad decisions on their part that made me shake my head and at times laugh out loud at their silly choices. I mean did they really think it was a good idea to run after an Asian girl (that only they can see) into the woods or enter an open door that mysteriously appeared in the house? All part of the fun and “Pernicious” is just that. A fun, (not overly original) horror movie but without being too serious.
If the characters had been anything but three hot, dingy Americans, it would have come across as too serious which would not have worked with the dialogue that, at times, was ridiculous. At the end we discover what happened to the statue and the missing men. Trust me, the last horror scene is not for those faint of heart. This movie is fun and entertaining with blood, guts, and bashing of skulls. And don’t forget the hotties.
