Movie Review: “Ninjas vs. Monsters” Is Cheesy Fun

A group of friends with special abilities (and guns) band together to fight the world’s most iconic monsters and rid the world of darkness.

I am always down for some nice low budget horror fun. With low budget horror you never know what you are going to get. Sometimes it’s so bad it’s funny and other times it’s just plain bad. “Ninjas vs. Monsters” is neither of those. It beautifully executes the satirical “cheese” it aims for that any fan of horror can appreciate.

“Ninjas vs. Monsters” is the third installment in a series preceded by “Ninjas vs. Zombies” and “Ninjas vs. Vampires,” and focuses on a group of seven friends, some of which have been granted the power of the ninja. In this final installment, the friends (some who have been lost to darker powers), find themselves exhausted by previous missions and desire escape from the chaos, although, as fate would have it, the Monsters are coming.

Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Wolf Man are here to regain their reputation as forces to be reckoned with and not the sensitive creatures and love interests of current popular culture à la Twilight. The plot itself is a bit all over the place. In between the excessive dizzying fight scenes and pop culture references you are left with a speckle of developing love interests and an ending makes you wish the success of good over evil was harder to achieve.

At its base the film is comical parody of good vs. evil with lots of guns & gore, martial arts, magic, overabundant expletives, ridiculous plot twists, and the obligatory half dressed woman or two. Admittedly, I have not yet seen the previous films but I have a feeling it is not a necessity (as the case may be with many comedic trilogies) to understand and enjoy the tongue-in-cheek humor of this horror spoof.
