Movie Review: “My Darling Vivian” Is A Beautiful Love Story That Was Almost Forgotten

The story of Vivian Liberto, Johnny Cash’s first wife and the mother of his four daughters.

Long before Johnny Cash was famous, he was just a smitten young man who fell in love with a woman named Vivian Liberto. Through years of love letters and childhood memories, his four daughters paint the real picture of the mother and wife nobody knew. In the summer of 1951, Johnny met Vivian at a skating rink and they became inseparable. While an Air Force cadet stationed in Germany, he sparked a three-year exchange of over a thousand letters between them until they finally married upon his return.

After Johnny’s singing career took off shortly after, Vivian was left to endure long days alone, caring for their children while Johnny was on the road. A private woman devoted to her family, Vivian was described as funny, stylish, and multifaceted, unlike the woman portrayed in films such as “Walk The Line.” This documentary gives a real voice to a woman who held down twelve years of marriage to one of the most iconic musicians of our time. Her children described the wonderful times and hardship of their life which included anxiety, depression, and even racism. His new wife, June Carter, stole the spotlight for years but through Vivian’s daughters, they make sure she will never be forgotten.
