Movie Review: “L.A. Slasher” Is A Satire-Filled Slasher Film To Make You Think

Driven to rage over the tawdry excesses of reality television, a self-appointed cultural crusader kidnaps several very famous nobodies to make his point- but his crimes only generate more tabloid frenzy.

If you can’t stand reality television or people who are famous just because they are rich, beautiful, or have a famous name, then you might have something in common with the L.A. Slasher. The film is much more than a slasher movie. The strength of this feature is the satire on reality television, people who are famous for just being famous, and the instant technology world we live in.

The movie starts with an animated introduction which changes into a non-animated movie. The 80’s soundtrack gives the film some added life as well. Martin Owen uses the slasher canvas to build his creative artwork. Built with an engaging soundtrack, incredible animation at times, cheesy character introduction graphics, social media boxes, and a great cast, Owen is able to get his satire and personality through to the audience. The cast in the movie is filled with award winning actors and actresses who have more merit than the characters they portray.

Mischa Barton who portrays the actress is an award winning actress most famous for her role on “The O.C.” The voice of the Slasher is played by comedian Andy Dick. David Bautista is an actor and fighter who has appeared in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and the film also features Golden Globe nominated actor Eric Roberts, award-winning actor and musician Drake Bell, award winning porn star Tori Black and veteran actor Danny Trejo who has appeared in “Heat,” “Con-Air,” and many more. The film also features Hulk Hogan’s daughter Brooke Hogan. The cast features more, these are just the highlights.

The film might not be for everyone. Sure there is some blood but the film might not be gruesome enough for die hard slasher fans. Might not have enough suspense for horror fans. If you don’t get the humor and the satire which the film is full of then you might be disappointed as well. This 85 minute film which feels shorter than that due to the length of the credits might be a tad short for a feature. The film is an artwork that might have trouble sticking in pigeon holed genres or staying within the lines.

If you get the humor and the satire you will enjoy this movie. The film makes you ponder if the world is better off without the socialite fame hunters. It will make you question if the quest for fame is worth more than compassion, interaction, and real life. Is life just about the online likes, tweets and attention? “L.A. Slasher” is a fun movie, a cinematic art piece that will make you think about the world we live in.

“L.A. Slasher” opens in theaters June 26th
