Movie Review: “Hearts Beat Loud” Could Have Been Great

[yasr_overall_rating]

A father and daughter form an unlikely songwriting duo in the summer before she leaves for college.

This movie is a BOMB! I was really rooting for it though.

I can tell it was supposed to be a feel-good father-daughter story which I was excited about because I am a singer and a daddy’s girl. But then it had so many things wrong with it that I just left feeling annoyed because my time was wasted.

The main plot of the film is that dad Frank (Nick Offerman), is a Musician who owns a record store that he is closing down. The daughter, Sam (Kiersey Clemons), is a few months away from going off to college when he decides they should start a band together. Then comes all of these weird sub-stories that don’t work because they are irrelevant.

First, we are presented with the grandmother, who is clearly losing her mind and is constantly being arrested for stealing. Why that is a main part of the movie, nobody knows.

Then Sam, all of a sudden, has this girlfriend who she is spending time with. The chemistry between them is so horrible I can’t even believe they are friends, let alone dating. Really bad acting, almost unbearable for me to watch.

Then there is the relationship between the dad and his landlord who rents him the record shop and all of a sudden, we see that he kind of wants to be with her. There is no backstory about them or anything just a bit of flirting. Just weird and inauthentic. They make a song, upload it to Spotify and it gets so many plays that a record label offers the dad a chance to really play for the public. So that’s when he suggests that they start this band.

I really think they tried to create something here and if they had worked on the script and cast, it could have been a loving feel-good story but it just was a waste of time. The cast seemed to have absolutely no chemistry and the script was all over the place which was a shame because I was hoping to see this teary-eyed film that actually went somewhere.

The only aspect I found great was Kiersey Clemon’s voice. The song they created together was actually really good. She is a fabulous singer and I am looking forward to seeing more of her singing in future films.

In theaters Friday, June 8th
