Movie Review: “Chapter & Verse” Is A Captivating Movie

[yasr_overall_rating]

Upon his return from serving a ten-year sentence in prison, reformed gang leader, S. Lance Ingram, struggles to adapt to a changed Harlem.

Summary

The story begins in the Urban streets of Harlem, USA. It actually starts at the end of the story and then rewinds to the events before it. Our main character, “L,” is an ex-convict and lives in parole housing. He’s adept at fixing computers and other appliances. “L” finds a job as a food server to other people. On his path, he finds many colorful characters and dangerous situations. Although rehabilitated and given freedom, his old ways start seeping back into his life. “L” finds it hard to focus and then commits a crime that becomes irreversible.

Acting: 5/5

The dramatic twists and turns in this film engage the viewer because the actors make them believable. I did not question, for any moment, these actors or the legitimacy of the delivery.

Effects/Sound/Setting: 4/5

Taking place in actual Harlem, it showcases fluidly. The subway, the park, the gangs, and every detail fully immerses you into the urban experience. I thought it was well planned out and expertly done.

Overall: (Final Thoughts) 3.5/5

The immersive and well-directed film engaged me for most moments. The heavy drama and melancholy tones really drove things home for me. Personally, my only problem with the film is the pacing. At times, the film feels stuck between many stories and it becomes constrictive. Although I don’t mind it being quiet and observant, it can certainly feel slow at points. Beyond that issue, the film felt authentic, unique, and inspired me to continue watching. I would certainly recommend this film for anyone wanting a deep and emotionally-driven film.

In theaters Friday, February 3rd
