Movie Review: “Ailey” Is Exciting And Deeply Moving

An immersive portrait of dance pioneer Alvin Ailey told through his own words and a new dance inspired by his life.

Raised in the south by a single mother, Alvin Ailey came a long way to become one of the world’s most renowned dancers and choreographers. Inspired by experiencing a ballet performance by Russe De Monte-Carlo, he later found a deep connection to modern dance.

This documentary brings to life Alvin Ailey’s journey of passion for connecting, inspiring and uplifting people of all walks of life through movement and storytelling. With video archives, photographs, and interviews with those who knew him well, the many facets that are Alvin Ailey come to life. This film is an intimate portrait of the man behind the image: Ailey, someone who shared his passion for creating art through dance with the world.

I thought this was an amazing story, exciting, and deeply moving however, I do wish the documentary would have dived deeper into the most uncomfortable issue which was his homosexuality and his death caused by AIDS.

Opens in Theaters Nationwide Friday, July 23rd
