Austin, TX – December 12, 2022 – Mondo, in partnership with Netflix and Cut Narrative Records, is incredibly excited to present the vinyl release of Nathan Johnson’s brilliant score to the latest Benoit Blanc mystery “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” debuting on Netflix on December 23rd.
Audiences who were lucky enough to have seen the film during its special theatrical sneak preview have already discovered that this highly anticipated sequel is nothing short of epic – and much of that is due to the gorgeous, sweeping score by Nathan Johnson. Johnson keeps intact the delicate balance that made “Knives Out” such a clever score, never undermining the danger that is around every corner but also bringing an intoxicating romanticism to every gorgeous landscape. It’s playful and sinister all at once.
“I’m thrilled to announce the release of my score for ‘Glass Onion’ on vinyl, but more specifically, I’m over the moon to be able to join forces again with the wonderful folks at Mondo,” says Johnson. “Everything they do is one-of-a-kind, but with this release, they’ve gone above and beyond. We’ve mastered this version specifically for vinyl so that it retains all the orchestral dynamics I’ve written into the score, and I can’t wait for people to get their hands on the artwork and peel back all of the beautiful layers. The package, carefully constructed by Jay Shaw and Mo Shafeek, pays homage to the film’s central mystery in multiple ways. Pressed on 2x 140 Gram Crystal Clear vinyl and housed in a die-cut jacket with an acrylic o-card and multiple inserts, the “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” soundtrack on vinyl will be available for pre-order at MondoShop.com on December 14th at 12 pm CT.
In the follow-up to Rian Johnson’s smash hit “Knives Out,” Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects. Returning to the franchise he began, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Rian Johnson writes and directs “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and assembles another all-star cast that includes a returning Daniel Craig alongside Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline with Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.
When Rian began writing “Knives Out,” he asked Nathan to create a unique sonic palette for the world inhabited by a debonair detective, Benoit Blanc. Inspired by murder mysteries of a bygone era, Nathan turned to slippery woodwinds, dissonant pianos, and eventually the jagged string quartet that would go on to become the film’s audio signature while simultaneously redefining the sound of the modern mystery.
With “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” Nathan’s score nods to the manor mystery of Knives Out, but the sonic palette is both expanded and inverted with a new quartet joining brass and harpsichord to flesh out the romantic themes of an entirely new mystery.
