DVD Review: “Scandal: Season 7” Gives A Scathing Reprisal Of Everything We Loved To Hate About Olivia Pope

A former White House Communications Director starts her own crisis management firm only to realize her clients are not the only ones with secrets.

The eighteen episodes that comprise the seventh and final season of “Scandal,” give us a broad spectrum of Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) politics vs. Cyrus Beene (Jeff Perry) infiltrations. Both the President and Vice President learn the hard way that the powers that be which direct their daily decisions are stand-alone power structures that dare them to think they can handle the position on their own merit. Both Jake Ballard (Scott Foley) and Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), who were each dependent upon one another in the past, have become irrefutable enemies who know each other too well to think that either of them can make a move without the other already knowing their plan of action.

Olivia, who has appointed herself to be all things B613, is in for a real treat when she gets backed into a corner after a last-ditch effort to poison Cyrus. When given the gun to shoot Cyrus quickly, instead of poisoning him slowly, becomes the only other option, she is unable to pull the trigger. Olivia soon regroups and realizes that she and Mellie must reevaluate their plan to conquer the world and reiterate that as women they won’t back down or be bullied into submission. In her weakest moment, Mellie Grant reaches out to her ex, Fitz Grant (Tony Goldwyn), and he reminds her that “she is better than all of them and not to lose her soul to the office.”

The powerful episodes of this season include titles such as “Watch Me,” “Lost Girls, “Vampires and Bloodsuckers,” “The People vs. Olivia Pope,” “Air Force Two,” and “Over A Cliff.” The series could not come to an end without Olivia and Fitz getting back together for a final rendezvous with a bottle of wine to commemorate their lustful, demoralizing and on-again, off-again partnership.

From 2012 to 2018, “Scandal,” created by Shonda Rhimes, gained a multitude of followers who believed in and had high hopes for the incredibly fashionable and power-hungry waymaker, Olivia Pope who diversified the political and social scenes. The inside look at political collusion and familial servitude brought out the best and worst in a cast of characters including Joe Morton, Darby Stanchfield (Abby Whelan), Cornelious Smith, Jr. (Marcus Walker), Joshua Malina (David Rosen), Guillermo Diaz (Huck) and Katie Lowes (Quinn Perkins) that were truly made for their scandalous roles. For fans who’ve maintained their allegiance, the complete series will provide extended entertainment for those who still aren’t ready to say goodbye to Olivia Pope and her ever-present need to get things handled.
