DVD Review: “Power: The Complete Sixth Season” Gives Us A Powerful Display Of Compassionless Survival

“Power: The Complete Sixth Season” follows James “Ghost” St. Patrick as he seeks vengeance, aims to get even with Tommy, builds the Queen’s Child Project to consecrate Raina’s legacy, and works to achieve a legitimate lifestyle.

At the very moment you thought that the five seasons of “Power” which preceded this were frickin unbelievable and totally incomprehensible, then you must readjust your entire thought process in order to prepare for this ruthless reckoning of powerful game-changers. This Starz set of fifteen episodes that breaks down every power player from the cradle to the grave, will leave you totally blindsided by the sheer levity of street intuition and business savvy used to humble and provoke family members, friends, business partners, and enemies. Executive Producer Curtis “50 cent” Jackson, well known for his money moves long before the “Power” Series began, has made an extremely successful transition from rap star to businessman to creative entrepreneur of entertaining and explicitly illegal activities.

When the season opens, James “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardrick), who is the czar of illicit dealings in this entire series, is settling into the prospect of finalizing his divorce with Tasha (Naturi Naughton) after they have long since gone their separate ways physically, but not emotionally. His relationship with Angela Valdez (Lela Loren), the DA who has protected him and his family, as well as fallen in love with him, gets to be very stressful as the feds are closing in on all of Ghost’s transgressions and want to use Angela to testify against him. Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora), who was raised with Ghost and has become an Achilles heel to him, is making powerful headway with his drug business and with his ride or die, LaKeisha Grant (La La Anthony), who used to be besties with, has replaced Holly (Lucy Walters) who seems to have disappeared when she got into the way of Tommy’s business transactions. In trying to maintain a professional front, both and Tasha have agreed to make their son Tariq’s (Michael Rainey, Jr.) education and his care, a priority after Tariq’s involvement with drugs and his father’s prison sentence, had him alienate the family and develop a strong bond with Tommy’s in his father’s absence.

Just as these new priorities begin to take shape, Ghost and Angela have a private meeting in order for Ghost to find where her loyalty lies and she ends up taking a deadly bullet that Tommy intended for Ghost. With that said, the entire remaining episodes focus on the feds finding out who killed Angela and why her killer is being protected. Angela’s sister is convinced that Ghost was the killer and she goes to the feds herself in order to get Ghost to take the hit for her family’s loss. As life continues, Vince becomes the higher power player and uses Ghost’s and Tommy’s bad blood in order to increase his drug business and get them to kill one another. While initially, they weren’t aware of the scheme, they later decide that since they were being forced to work together, they may as well come up with a plan to eliminate Vincent, which would be an immediate cure for the majority of their issues. While there continues to be fallout amongst the inner workings of the feds’ collaboration, more corruption is revealed and Ghost once again crosses paths with Dre (Rotimi) who is both needy and untrustworthy, and Rashad (Larenz Tate) whose political aspirations have become a breeding ground for the new life that Ghost hopes to begin to leave his corrupt past behind him. Ghost’s new positioning for politics puts him in close contact with a powerful political consultant who ends up stealing his heart before she ever realizes who he truly is. When Ghosts’ political strategies seem to be catapulting him into the spotlight as a worthy statesman, all of his enemies have their own reasons for making certain he never reaches his goal. As more dead bodies begin to turn up, Ghost vows that nothing will get in the way of his new future.

By the end of the season, the twists and turns will have you wondering who is still breathing and will ultimately have you checking your own pulse as this emotionally riveting series of the ultimate dissolution of virtues will have you laughing, crying, screaming and shaking your head in utter disbelief all at the same time. The writers, actors, and the entire set of collaborators have made this entire series an excellent form of entertainment in every aspect of its production. Do yourself a favor and binge on every single episode and your only regret will be knowing that compassionless survival is a thing, and there is absolutely nothing you can do to change the intriguing power of the ruthless!
