DVD Review: “Playtime With Puppy Dog Pals” Are Strange Dogs With Special Abilities Like Inspector Gadget

Adorable puppy brothers Bingo and Rolly are back! Join the doggy duo on amazing missions: deep-sea diving in the Great Barrier Reef, fetching a four-leaf clover in Ireland, running all over Down Under, and much more!

The puppies Bingo and Rolly in the toddler show “Puppy Dog Pals,” are adorable with big doe eyes and tiny little bodies, like those famous stuffed animals or maybe like aliens. Trust me, these are no ordinary dogs but special ones with superpowers. Just kidding, but seriously the show avoids some pretty important stuff like the laws of physics, the passage of time, and just about everything else normal to the world. Of course, the show is for toddlers, and they know none of this stuff yet so far be it from me to deny them a bunch of playful puppies on missions.

This particular DVD comes with seven two-part episodes, two of which are bonus content. So weird, why not just say seven episodes or two of the episodes are from the new upcoming season? Also, the disc has eight bonus shorts too for 120 minutes of air time to keep your three-year-old occupied so you can drink a cup of coffee in peace and maybe search Zulily for a new pair of boots. You don’t need to worry about the content. Normal time laws may not apply but the pups aren’t up to anything that could influence your child negatively. In fact, your kiddo may learn about teamwork, loyalty, and empathy while watching this cartoon.

Here’s a taste of what to expect in the show but first, maybe don’t stay in the room for the songs. They are terrible. Disney used to create lyrics worthy of rote memorization but that time is in the past. Puppies Rolly and Bingo live with their beloved owner Bob, purple cat Hissy, and robot dog who knows everything A.R.F. Now a new friend shows up, Keia but only in the bonus episodes. The two pups attempt a new mission every day with the help of Go-Go-Gadget collars. I want one of these collars. They light up and manage any and every task the puppies need from a parachute to scuba masks, to storage devices, and more. Anyway, most of their missions revolve around their bumbling but good-natured owner Bob or their cat Hissy. They manage to travel to other countries and return while Bob is at work for eight hours. Another talent is the ability to talk to other animals, swim underwater, carry objects bigger than themselves without opposable thumbs, and so much more. All this with song and dance and a whole host of friends. Oh, they also go on the hunt for a unicorn during their travels.

I wouldn’t suggest watching the show without your kids personally requesting it, but if they already know about the show and love it, then they will love this DVD. The set would be great for car trips or rainy days. Since most toddlers become rather obsessive about things they love, this DVD may even save your sanity, that is until the music drives you to insanity.
