DVD Review: “Jerry Lewis 10 Film Collection” Is Worth Every Penny

[yasr_overall_rating]

Relive some of the greatest film moments from comedy legend and Hollywood icon Jerry Lewis with the new “Jerry Lewis 10 Film Collection.”

It’s hard to believe that Jerry Lewis has been gone not quite a year. Lewis who passed away on August 20th, 2017, was a brash slapstick comic who become a pop culture icon with his partnership with Dean Martin. After the comic duo split, he (Lewis) would reinvent himself and make comic classics such as “The Nutty Professor” and “The Bellboy.”

The packaging is great and on the back of the sleeve and the actual box set, they have included over fifteen pictures from the films included in this box set. There are no dual movies on any of the discs. Each movie is on its own disc and each is marked indicating they have special features. The set includes over an hour and a half worth of very funny bloopers, deleted scenes, outtakes, screen tests and more.

This box set is a great sampling of the immense talent of Jerry Lewis. The movies are beautifully mastered and Lewis is one of the best comedic actors of that time period. Sure, it’s far from the complete or the best of Lewis, but it’s a great start. It includes “The Nutty Professor,” which has been called his best. I like it, not because it is great, funny stuff, but because it is smooth, funny and colorful.

All 10 of these movies are so entertaining, that you can watch them over and over. One can be relieved to know that on June 12th Paramount Home Media Distribution is releasing this 10 film collection on DVD. If you’re a Jerry Lewis fan – or simply someone who appreciates quality movies – these are must-see films. There is enough bonus material – not to mention the timeless movies themselves – that makes this collection very much worth your purchase. Make this boxed set part of your collection today.

Let’s take a quick look at the 10 films in the boxset.

The 10-DVD set includes the following:

  • The Stooge (1951) — Dean Martin plays a failing nightclub singer who starts drawing a crowd when he hires a bumbler as comic relief (Lewis).
  • The Delicate Delinquent (1956) — Sidney Pythias (Lewis) is a bumbling janitor picked up by a cop as a teenage gang member worth saving from delinquency. With a little help, Sidney works his way through the Police Academy to become a cop.
  • The Bellboy (1960) — Lewis plays a mostly mute Miami hotel employee named Stanley (in a homage to comedian Stan Laurel) who fumbles through a series of slapstick scenarios with his wealthy guests. It is said that he took his inspiration from Charlie Chaplin for this movie.
  • Cinderfella (1960) — Lewis’ take on the well-known fairy tale (Cinderella, with Lewis playing a stressed stepson enchanting a princess.
  • The Errand Boy (1961) — Paramount Pictures needs a spy to find out the inner workings of their studio. Morty Tashman (Lewis) has been decided that he is the man for the job. But all that Morty ever finds is that he finds havoc no matter what he does.
  • The Ladies Man (1961) — In “The Ladies Man,” Lewis plays a clumsy fellow working at a female-only boardinghouse. There is a five-minute routine that is perhaps his best and funniest routine.
  • The Nutty Professor (1963) — Lewis’s best-known film as he plays a bucktoothed, nasal-voiced, ultra-nerdy mad scientist which is a parody of Jekyll & Hyde.
  • The Disorderly Orderly (1964) — In this performance, Lewis, is a medical school hypochondriac. He decided he needs to pick up shifts at a sanitarium to help his depressed girl.
  • The Patsy (1964) — After a star comedian dies, the team decides to train a nobody to fill his shoes for a big TV show. However, the man they pick isn’t doing anything right.
  • The Family Jewels (1965) — When nine-year-old Donna Peyton’s father dies and leaves her with a $30 million fortune, she learns she must visit each of her six uncles (all played by Jerry Lewis) and decide which of them will become her new “father.”
