DVD Review: “I Am Elizabeth Smart” And Hope Is All I Had

Police launch a high-profile investigation after a teenager is abducted from her bedroom in Salt Lake City.

“I Am Elizabeth Smart” is a Lifetime film which tells the story of the abduction of the 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart in June of 2002. What makes this movie special is that the real-life Elizabeth Smart serves as the on-screen narrator that provides details regarding her feelings about the abduction from her Salt Lake City home by religious fanatic Brian David Mitchell (Skeet Ulrich).

Elizabeth’s abduction was a much-publicized event regarding the night she was dragged out of her bed at knifepoint, forced to march in the woods, and then marry Brian Mitchell. He then took her as his second wife. It was there in the woods that she was starved, drugged, raped and subjected to bizarre religious rituals until, nine months later, she enabled her own rescue.

His first wife, in his twisted world, Wanda Barzee (Deirdre Lovejoy), was a co-conspirator who, at times, you got the sense that she wanted to leave and have this nightmare end. However, even though she wanted to leave and have basic supplies like water and food, she was under the power of Mitchell.

This film was done very well without too many disturbing details yet you get the whole story. For me, I enjoyed the fact that Elizabeth was able to be the on face narrator throughout. I never felt that there was anything distracting about the movie or the writing as the movie had something of value to say.

Available on DVD July 10th
