DVD Review: A Serial Killer-Turned-Drone Takes Revenge On His Ex In “The Drone”

A newlywed couple is terrorized by a consumer drone that has become sentient with the consciousness of a deranged serial killer.

This film is about a serial killer who uses a drone to watch his victims. When he is finally cornered by authorities on his rooftop, he gets struck by lightning while holding the drone and transforms. As soon as couple Chris (John Brotherton) and Rachel (Alex Essoe) move into their new home, Chris finds a drone in front and takes it in.

They begin to notice unusual things happening right away as the drone moves around the house recording everything that goes on. Their dog is killed and ultimately their neighbor is murdered and Chris is framed. Determined to find out where the drone came from, the couple hires an investigator who tracks its location to the home of the killer’s brother. When Chris and Rachel arrive, they confront the brother about the drone and end up killing him in a fight. Rachel notices a photo of her ex-boyfriend with his brother on his table and puts the pieces together knowing that the killer drone is her ex-boyfriend. Towards the end of the movie, they realize that setting the drone on fire can actually get rid of it but it doesn’t end there. While the couple thinks they have killed the drone, Rachel goes upstairs to call the police while Chris picks up the shattered parts. Staring into a piece of the drone, Chris becomes hypnotized and turns into the killer. Rachel has to fight him off and ends up killing her own husband.

I loved the idea of a killer drone but the story was weak. It took so long to reveal who the drone belonged to, why it was killing and why it targeted this couple. I still can’t figure out if this film is supposed to be scary, funny or serious because there isn’t a clear direction but a lot of silly dialogue and jokes I didn’t laugh at. It takes forever to develop and when it finally does, it goes in a direction that was meant to be shocking but it doesn’t work. Don’t rush out to see this one.
