Blu-ray Review: “The Weekend” Is A Fun Comedy About Dealing With The Grey Areas In Relationships

A comedian goes away for the weekend with an ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend.

When Zadie (Sasheer Zamata) invites her ex-boyfriend Bradford (Tone Bell) to spend the weekend at her mother’s bed and breakfast, he shows up with his new girlfriend Margo (DeWanda Wise) and things begin to get uncomfortable. Since breaking up three years ago, neither seems to be able to completely let go or move forward as a couple. Zadie is self-centered, high strung and hard to please and although Bradford finds it immature, he wants to remain in her life but not as the boyfriend.

Unhappy that Margo has joined them, Zadie goes out of her way to poke fun at her and embarrass Bradford with stories from their past. All is fun and games until a sexy man named Aubrey (Y’lan Noel) shows up at the bed and breakfast and his presence brings out the real emotions between everyone. Margo invites Aubrey to join them for drinks, thinking it can be a good distraction for Zadie, but when Zadie begins showing Aubrey a lot of attention, both men get competitive against each other in order to win her affection. Aubrey, a newly single man finds Zadie’s personality endearing and he really begins to like her but she is obviously not over the relationship she had with Bradford. While looking through Bradford’s things, Zadie finds an engagement ring that he has been holding onto for months deciding whether or not to propose to Margo. She confronts him about the ring and he confesses that he is still in love with her. Zadie does not fall for his tactic to keep her waiting on the side emotionally while dating other people.

While enveloped in her own life, Zadie doesn’t even realize that her mother is having relationship problems of her own. When she confronts her about her dad not coming back home, she learns a lesson in maturity and what it really takes to maintain a life long marriage. I loved this story, it was so light-hearted and funny but the lessons about paying attention to other’s needs and knowing when to let go and move on, are deep. Zadie does give Aubrey a chance as she finally decides that waiting for Bradford is a waste of time and Margo too, makes a decision regarding her relationship and self-worth. Great cast, beautiful film, and the soundtrack is absolutely amazing.
