Blu-ray Review: “The Hustle” Makes Turnabout Fair Play In A Hilarious Comeuppance

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as female scam artists, one low rent and the other high class, who team up to take down the men who have wronged them.

“The Hustle” wastes no time airing dirty laundry in a vicious battle where territory is only temporary. Rebel Wilson stars as Penny, a down-on-her-luck obnoxious female who turns small tricks on small people in order to gain a little bit of leverage in life. When she decides to take her skills to Europe, fate meets her onboard an aircraft where she runs into high-end operator Josephine Chesterfield (Anne Hathaway), who thinks this low-level con artist is in above her head, way before she ever gets started. With nothing to prove and time on her hands, Penny tries to upgrade her skills and bottom-line finances by leveraging a broader playing field. In an unlikely coincidence, she negotiates an opportunity to learn more tricks of the trade while at the same time proving she is worthy to be in the big leagues.

The power struggles between Penny and Josephine are both hilarious and heartbreaking in their turf wars to take over Beaumont-Sur-Mer. As they continuously try to outwit one another in abrasive and hard-to-watch scenarios, it soon becomes apparent that their down-and-dirty tactics would be greatly enhanced by their ability to compromise with one another. The biggest showdown rears its ugly head when Tech Millionaire Thomas Westerburg (Alex Sharp) comes to town and each woman has to win his heart and bank account in a short period of time.

The entire film, which is one big remake of several small remakes of “The Hustle” movie and “The Hustle” TV series, is a copycat move from “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and yet it is still a source of continuous laughter. Rebel Wilson is the best at making sleazy characters into everyday people, and Anne Hathaway, no matter how treacherous the role, is still prim and proper with her catwalk personality and fathomless beauty. With that said, the combination of the two flip flops into a well-heeled comeuppance, yet one still wonders just how many remakes can a remake, make?
