Blu-ray Review: “Supernatural: The Complete Fourteenth Season” Is One Of The Very Best Seasons

Two brothers follow their father’s footsteps as hunters, fighting evil supernatural beings of many kinds, including monsters, demons, and gods that roam the earth.

Covering a television show week-to-week versus covering a Blu-ray release of the entire season is, as one can imagine, quite different. Having covered only a few series premires I am not too privy to how it goes but after talking with a few people, the writer is, at most times only afforded an episode or two.

With that in mind, I can see now how so many reviews gave the series a negative start when the fourteenth season first aired. The series premiere was one that felt as if it was supposed to be a fly by episode, one that held some story development but not something that should be viewed as a season opener. Armed with the complete season in my hand, coupled with hindsight that I had seen it all before, I have to say that this release is one of the very best and that is a lot seeing as how I’ve been on this ride since September of 2005. The season has a slow start but it does pick up and is far from the political mess that was the season before it.

For those who are still midseason or maybe just at the beginning, I won’t spoil too much but essentially, Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) is possessed by Micheal and doesn’t doddle in the least bit to see his grand plan set in motion. As with every season beforehand, the evil arc isn’t long for this world and in time, Dean and Micheal are separated from each other and the day is saved by Sam and the crew.

The emotional rollercoaster that is “Supernatural” always puts points on the board for good content and this season is no different. While everyone will have their own episode that they hold on to, the 300th episode is, by far, my favorite. “Lebanon,” as it is called, shows the return of John Winchester, played by the great Jeffery Dean Morgan and he does not disappoint. This episode will not only be a highlight of the fourteenth season but a highlight of the entire series and will pull on even the coldest of heartstrings. I would have to add that among a list of episodes one should highlight, “Moriah” is worth a watch as well due to the fact that it sets up what will be the fifteenth and final season of the long-running series.

In the end, this season has to be among the greats of the era and, unlike the previous two seasons, which have been filled with half-baked attempts at passing as what once was, this season is one that really showcases what showrunners can do. This is the storytelling that has driven fans to appreciate what this show is really about, family. One can only hope that the final season will continue to do the same.
