Blu-ray Review: “Spiritwalker” Is An Intriguing Yet Flawed Body Swapping Action Thriller

After waking up from a car crash, unable to remember anything about his life, a man begins regaining consciousness in a new body every 12 hours. Now, he must piece together his identity while evading attacks from pursuing agents and dangerous criminals alike. But with no memory—and no allies—his time is running out.

Joining the likes of “You Won’t Be Alone” and “Freaky Friday,” “Spiritwalker” is a mystery-thriller centered on an amnesiac man, Kang I-an (Yoon Kye-Sang), who is unwillingly subjected to wear the skin of an assortment of anonymous individuals. Every twelve hours I-an becomes another person whilst having to piece together his original self and solve his mysterious origin story before his enemies can deliver their coup de grace.

Luckily for the forgetful protagonist, a homeless man offers assistance and alleviates the serious tone with some comedic moments. Erstwhile, a black ops team tries to find him while secrets and bodies pile up. Lead performer Kye-sang is known for being a K-Pop Singer, but he actually can act.

Although Writer/Director Yoon Jae-keun’s premise is cribbed from other stories, his visual style and pacing are solid. Yoon is a relatively newcomer and keeps the action clean while maintaining a healthy action-to-story ratio.

While “Spiritwalker” does not reach the heights of other exceptional Korean action films, its finale is impressive. Conceptually the screenplay mostly works, but it is very interesting to see another movie centered around empathetic filmmaking.
