Blu-ray Review: “DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow: The Complete Fifth Season” Flies High

“DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” follows a group of misfit heroes as they fight, talk, and sing their way through protecting the timeline from aberrations, anomalies, and anything else that threatens to mess with history.

After the lackluster season four, which played out more for laughs than anything else, season five tries to get regain the tone of the earlier seasons. For the most part. No more Heyworlds and man-eating dragons. Season four felt so disjointed and all over the place I really didn’t know if the producers were going to be able to salvage things with season five but thankfully, again, for the most part, they have.

Season five starts off with “Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Five,” with our heroes waking up in a fresh new universe, and just when things feel like they are back to normal, they are attacked by shadow demons. When they realize that the Anti-Monitor is still alive and planning to destroy the universe, a big battle ensues with some of our heroes distracting him while Nash, Ray Palmer, Barry Allen, and Ryan Choi create a bomb that can shrink the Anti-Monitor. Once completed, Supergirl activates it and sends him to the Microverse. Later, a memorial service is held in memory of Oliver Queen and the noble sacrifice he made for mankind.

With the Time Bureau now destroyed, Ava Sharpe unites with the Legends and hires a documentary film crew to follow her and the Legends around, proving to the world just how in unison they all are but as soon as Sara, Ray, and Mick Rory come back from the Crisis, a timequake occurs which sends the Legends to 1917 Russia, where Grigori Rasputin has come back to life. Utilizing a mockumentary film-style to show them killing Rasputin, they must then tackle mobster Bugsy Siegel in 1947 who has also been revived (a lot of resurrections this season) and they all get the opportunity to dress up in 1940s noir attire, and then it’s forward to the 1980s and the prom to try and stop a serial killer while Constantine resorts to risky measures to stop Astra’s damned souls from causing havoc on earth.

The Loom of Fates also comes into play during season five with Charlie wanting to keep them apart while Constantine wants to unite them so he can correct one of his biggest mistakes. Naturally, news of the Loom gets back to Lachesis, who is in hell creating soul coins, and she has a favor over Astra that she plans on calling in, putting an end to the Legends, once and for all. This season said goodbye to some Legends, such as Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and Nora Dahrk (Courtney Ford) but whenever we lose an old team member, a new one is right around the corner.

“DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow” has been renewed for a sixth season which is set to premiere in midseason 2021 so the producers will have plenty of time to continue where season five left off, and create some new storylines and character arcs. If you were disappointed with season four, buckle up, season five is going to blow you away!
