4K Ultra HD Review: Dwayne Johnson & Kevin Hart Infuse “DC League Of Super-Pets” With Undeniable Chemistry

Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime side by side in Metropolis. However, when Superman is kidnapped, Krypto must master his powers for rescue missions.

As far as Superman canon goes, when Kal-El, aka Clark Kent, aka Superman, was a baby, he lived with his mother and father, Jor-El and Lara, on the planet Krypton. When Jor-El discovered that their world would be destroyed when its red supergiant sun exploded, he and Lara sent Kal-El in a spaceship to Earth so he would have a chance at a long life, gifted with superhuman strength and powers. In “DC League of Super-Pets,” the film opens with Kal-El and Lara getting ready to send Jor-El to Earth, but at the last minute, his dog Krypto (Dwayne Johnson) jumps into the ship with him, and both depart Krypton for Earth.

Many years later, Superman (John Krasinski) and Krypto, who also has superpowers, live in Metropolis. Things are going great for Krypto; Superman is his best and only friend, he joins him daily, apprehending bad guys and bringing them to justice, and they go for walks together, but when Superman proposes to Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde), Krypto feels rejected and shunned. At the same time, Lex Luthor (Marc Maron) intercepts an orange Kryptonite meteor in outer space; he gets wind of the fact that, unlike green Kryptonite that strips Superman of his powers, orange Kryptonite will give anybody who touches it their own superpowers. When the Justice League intercepts the meteor, Superman and Krypto send it back into outer space, but a laser beam from an unknown destination within the city manages to capture a tiny shard of the meteor.

The laser beam belongs to Lulu (Kate McKinnon), an evil hairless guinea pig who once worked with Lex Luthor many years ago. She is determined to take over the city and rid the world of the Justice League. After an elaborate and well-thought-out plan, she manages to apprehend the entire Justice League, imprisoning them and stripping Krypto of his superpowers, but in the process, accidentally bestows superpowers on a ragtag team of animals in the shelter she just escaped from; a Boxer named Ace (Kevin Hart), a potbellied pig named PB (Vanessa Bayer), a turtle named Merton (Vanessa Bayer), and a squirrel named Chip (Diego Luna). Having just escaped the confinement of the shelter, Ace and his friends want to get back to living their lives, but when they meet Krypto, he begs for their help in freeing Superman and the Justice League, and they form an alliance to save the day!

“DC League of Super-Pets” is based on DC’s “Legion of Super-Pets,” which first appeared in Adventure Comics #293 in February 1962. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart lead the pack. Their chemistry is indisputable, especially considering the duo are friends in real life and have worked together on numerous projects, including “Central Intelligence,” “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” and its sequel, “Jumanji: The Next Level,” with Hart also making a cameo in “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” the Fast & Furious spinoff which starred Johnson and Jason Statham. John Krasinski voices Superman, and Keanu Reeves voices Batman, and together, along with a terrific ensemble cast, they imbue “DC League of Super-Pets” with a plethora of hijinks, slapstick humor, and heartfelt moments, sure to bring a smile to all the kiddos’ faces. And maybe the parents as well.
