Blu-ray™ Review: The Celebration Of Disney’s 100 Years Of Magic And Wonder Continues With “Mickey & Friends 10 Classic Shorts – Volume 2”

Celebrate 100 magical years of Disney with this collectible compilation of animated shorts! Join Mickey and his friends in these 10 hilarious, madcap adventures which have entertained generations of children and adults alike.

Just like the Pixar shorts, Walt Disney Animation Studios continues the 100-year celebration by releasing a second bundle of classic animated shorts, again turned into animated-package films. If you noticed the Volume 1 title from the previous package, it indicates that there will be more releases in the future. The second volume is the Disney 100 celebratory release of “Mickey & Friends 10 Classic Shorts – Volume 2,” which is now available to purchase on Digital and on Blu-ray™ and DVD on June 27th. Here, you get to see Mickey and the gang heading back to the silver screen in this all-new collector’s edition.

Here’s a list of animated shorts featured in the release:

  • The Band Concert: the first Mickey Mouse film produced in color featuring Mickey conducting a small band, which struggles through a distraction-filled public performance.
  • Lonesome Ghosts: features Mickey, Donald, and Goofy, who, as members of The Ajax Ghost Exterminators, are hired to get rid of the four ghosts at the haunted house that has long been abandoned.
  • Pluto’s Sweater: features Pluto, who tries to get rid of his new sweater Minnie made for him.
  • Mr. Duck Steps Out: features Donald Duck, who visits the house of his new love interest, Daisy Duck, for their first date. This cartoon features the debut of Daisy Duck.
  • Boat Builders: features Mickey and his friends Donald and Goofy, who attempt to build a boat made out of fold-out parts.
  • Tugboat Mickey: features Mickey, who captains a tugboat with Donald and Goofy as his crew.
  • Winter Storage: features Chip and Dale, who steal Donald’s acorns while he is planting oak trees.
  • Pluto and the Gopher: features Pluto, who finds himself outwitted by a mischievous rodent.
  • Pluto’s Party: features Pluto, who celebrates his birthday while Mickey is busy making birthday preparations for his birthday dog.
  • Mickey’s Trailer: features Mickey, Donald, and Goofy, who went on a (near) disastrous road trip in a travel trailer.

Once again, like the first volume, all of the shorts have full-screen formats (1:33:1), with each of them pillarboxed in its original academy ratio, and a freeze-framed sequence is included in the film and is assembled by Mickey Mouse (voiced by Bret Iwan) and his friends with the characters being silhouetted in the sequence (akin to “The Lion King 1½”). Still, it’s a magical experience seeing Mickey and the gang sharing their cherishable memories again while, at the same time, offering 82 minutes of wonder and entertainment.

“Mickey & Friends 10 Classic Shorts – Volume 2” continues to honor the legacy of Walt Disney and his vision. It’s great to see this collection features a handful of hilarious cartoons starring Mickey Mouse and his friends, and I can’t see what’s more coming from the Disney Vault as we get more volumes coming up for this year. But for the time being, this package, once again, allows the fans to go back in time and watch some amazing cartoons filled with surprises, laughs, and slapstick comedy like it’s Saturday morning. If you’re a huge fan of Disney films and cartoons, this is a collection you won’t want to miss out on.

Now available on Digital HD, and on Blu-ray™ and DVD June 27th
