TV Review: “Wizard Wars” Are Magically Delicious

Teams of master magicians create and perform original magic routines using random props.

Growing up in Dublin, Ireland, one of my closest friends, Paul Brady, was and still is, an amazing magician. His mother and father were magicians and Paul and his brother John became magicians too. And not just the friendly neighbor magician who appear at children’s birthday parties, no, between Paul and John, they were internationally renowned and had a nasty habit of levitating cars and making them disappear before your very eyes. The old adage, “a magician never performs the same trick twice,” is absolutely true because after 27 years of friendship, he still won’t tell me how he does his tricks.

I had never seen “Wizard Wars” before I watched the episode titled “Fire and Mice,” which airs tonight on SyFy at 10/9c. Over the years, there have been many TV shows about magicians but “Wizard Wars” actually gives them a platform in which to perform and compete against each other. Penn & Teller are American illusionists and entertainers who have performed together since the late 1970s, noted for their ongoing act which combines elements of comedy with magic and they are the primary judges every week and are accompanied by two guest judges.

In this episode, we have four challengers, Bill Cook and David Shareef who must compete against David Dow and Sean Scott and between them all, they are given random items and must incorporate them into whatever routine they are about to perform. From levitating tennis balls and swallowed mice to teleportation and floating surfboards, there’s enough magic in here to keep you scratching your head in disbelief. Don’t try and figure out how these magicians do their tricks, just sit back, enjoy the show and be amazed. Highly recommended.

“Fire and Mice” airs Thursday, Jan. 29th at 10/9c on SyFy
