TV Review: “Married At First Sight: The First Year”

[yasr_overall_rating]

We follow the lives of the two couples who decided to remain married after “Married at First Sight.”

For those who have not been acquainted with the series “Married at First Sight,” it is somewhat of a scientific arranged marriage, where a team of scientists and “experts” dabble in matchmaking and pair people up with the most scientifically compatible partners. These people, who have never met each other, are then married on the spot, “at first sight.” They have five weeks to get to know each other and at the end they get to decide whether or not they will remain married or get divorced. “Married at First Sight: The First Year,” follows the two couples who decided to take the challenge that much further and stay married. While I found “Married at First Sight,” to be quite nonsensical hokey pseudo-science, it nevertheless was somewhat interesting, and “The First Year,” is no different.

We follow the couples Jamie & Doug and Cortney & Jason, as they navigate through their lives as married couples where the honeymoon phase is slightly over and yet they are still trying to get to know each other. They are striving to thrive but with each still trying to keep communication alive and rekindle connections we see that marriage isn’t easy.

Jamie & Doug while still trying to keep the romance alive are having a communication breakdown when it comes to creating a family. Jamie desperately wants to start trying to get pregnant while Doug seemingly has no interest and has created the perfect “pre-baby bucket list,” full of ridiculous goals like ghost hunting and living in the wild. Jamie admits that they have reached a plateau of sorts and anxiety is on the rise. While Doug treats Jamie to a cute date for her birthday it is somewhat painfully obvious that they are both trying too hard and at the same time not nearly enough. Someone is missing the point and I’m not certain who that someone is yet.

Cortney and Jason seem to be fairing far better even if Cortney is only home on weekends due to her new job as a special effects makeup artist. They are cute and flirty with each other and seem to be genuinely happy for the time being. Not too much going on in terms on conflict, but storms may be rolling in soon enough as previews show what’s to come.

“Married at First Sight: The First Year,” is a little plain Jane compared to other shows of the same nature. The “at first sight” novelty is lost and you are simply watching married life unfold for better or worse. But it’ll be interesting to see what’s to come based on previews for the season. Will communication and romance be reestablished or will it all come crashing down?

“Married at First Sight: The First Year” premieres tonight at 9/8c on FYI
