Tribeca Film Festival Review: “Crshd” Is A Fun Film About Friendship And Growing Up

On the last night of her college freshman year, Izzy tries to lose her virginity with the help of her two best friends but their only hope is getting into an exclusive, invite-only “Crush Party.”

Three friends, Izzy (Isabelle Barbier), Fiona (Sadie Scott) and Anuka (Deeksha Ketkar) decide to lose their virginity before freshman year is over. After many failed attempts to get her crush Nolan (Abdul Seidu) to notice her, Izzy overhears word about a crush party where she thinks she may be able to finally hook up with Nolan. The party is designed to bring people who crush each other together. You write your crush’s name on a piece of paper and drop it off at a special location. If someone crushes you and hands in your name, you get an invitation to the party. When they arrive at the location, Izzy writes down her crush’s name and because Anuka feels sorry for Izzy, she secretly put her name on a paper and hands it in.

While Fiona and Anuka can easily find hookups, Izzy’s awkwardness prevents her from being herself around guys. Fixated on getting Nolan to notice her, she completely ignores a guy named Oliver (Ralph Fineberg) who constantly tries to get her attention. The party is a bomb, Nolan could care less about Izzy, Izzy loses earrings Anuka let her borrow, and because she stole shoes from Fiona’s job at the bowling alley, everyone is upset with her. By the end of the film, Izzy gets her chance to hook up with Nolan but turns it down, makes up with her friends and we have a happily ever after finale.

The film was really fun but predictable. It did, however, have an interesting way of using social media interaction between the characters. This film is for a very young audience but still enjoyable.

“Crshd” recently premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival
