“The Mummy” Remake Is Obsessed With Ancient Egypt

“The Mummy” recently released a trailer and it showed us some of what we can expect from this 2017 remake. The trailer showed us a lot of things namely who the main villain and protagonists will be. With Tom Cruise taking the leading role alongside Annabelle Wallis as they face off against Princess Ahmanet (The Mummy) played by Sofia Boutella.

The premise for this movie is that the American army opens the Tomb of the long dead Princess Ahmanet who has held a millennia-long grudge. This grudge was born from her father not wanting to name her rule of Egypt until he had a son. This caused Ahmanet to kill her father and try to claim the throne anyway. She was stopped and buried, deep in Egypt.

This movie is a complete reboot of “The Mummy” franchise and as such it has no ties to the previous films starring Brendan Fraser. These films, especially the first and second, are classic action films so this reboot has a lot to live up to. The tone of this film feels a lot more similar to the pacing found in recent Marvel or Michael Bay-style releases. Although we can hold out hope for the more considered and comical action from the original films.

Egypt and “The Mummy” are common and popular themes through other kinds of media. Video games often use Egypt as a setting or draw from their mythology. Lara Croft from the “Tomb Raider” franchise has visited Egypt as part of her adventures and Egypt was a playable nation in the latest Civilization game, too. Egypt also a popular theme in online casinos with websites like LadyLucks have slots like Cleopatra Plus. There is no denying our obsession with the wonders of ancient Egypt. It would, however, be interesting other mythology was explored further. We’ve seen a slew of Norse, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman related media that it would be nice to see Irish mythology get some attention.

“The Mummy” was filmed across the UK in Oxford, Surrey, and London, so it has authentic settings and landmarks. Currently, “The Mummy” is due for release on June 9th after being delayed from its initial 2016 release. It will be coming in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D to various theaters.
